Al's is a Chicago staple for a reason. I hadn't yet visited them after living in the city for more than eight years which was a considerable mistake. The sandwiches were great. Their bread had just the right amount of chew to stay stable with all of the juices flowing through the thing. I asked for mine extra spicy and while I won't say the sandwich was spicy, the pepper blend they used added to the beef flavor really well.
The sandwiches are messy and unrefined but the elements going into them are right and the atmosphere promotes them. Make sure to stand if you're in your good slacks and you'll learn that it's okay to dribble meat juice on the table.
This was my first meal in Chicago as it's quite close to Union Station. Even though I was the only person at the counter I was left standing there for several minutes while staff walked past me. The food was cheap and came out fast though it was sloppy and the fries weren't fresh.
The Al's beef regular sandwich is what I ordered and it was very delicious . The bread was soft and the beef so juicy !!! Cooked to perfection. beautifully done restaurant with polite Staff .
Stopped here after getting off of the bus and wandering around the city. I had never been to Chicago before and this was my inaugural Chicago meal. I had a classic Italian beef sandwich and a soda. The proportion was good as was the flavor. It seemed like one of those classic local eateries people talk about (i.e. Pats, Genos, etc.).
It was a nice experience stopping by and I would again should I return to Chicago. Since I was working an event I didn't have much time to go here again or to many other places for that matter, but it's a place you should check out at least once while you're in the area.
Awesome Chicago style sliced beef sandwiches. The best in town, a must try!
